Ever heard of the First Amendment?

2006-11-20 7:07 p.m.

... sometimes I feel like people forget it.

This semester, I must say, it has been really exciting to be a Political Science major. Watching the Democrats take the Legislature... it was like a dream come true. And though I may not always agree with his logic, Justice Scalia must be proud to see such a backlash from the people. And how American it is. The democratic system, though it seems to not really work at times, came through. The voice of the people was heard, and with any luck, the changes we're asking, nay, DEMANDING, should be on the way. I like to think that news like that, if it were to meet the ears of those in the Middle East, who knows? Maybe they too can understand how wonderful it can be to be "equal." (Not to say that Americans are necessarily equal citizens, but hey, we're not in the Middle East, you know? Furthermore, I don't believe that democracy is necessarily "the best" form of government.)

But I digress...

The best part about being a Political Science major is that we get to talk about current events. I mean, all the time you went into class talking about shit that happened hundreds of years ago. I get to go into class and talk about things that are going on in the world, RIGHT NOW! TODAY! And its things that people need to know. But not everyone pays attention. All these people waving their flags, calling for blood over seas. Screaming about fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here. They refuse to look at the facts. Something happened since the 1960s. I've been brought up in a generation that not only won't do anything, but we're coming up in a time where people have stopped thinking for themselves. The "need to be united" has at some point overcome the need to "think for oneself." Not only is it not okay to declare your negative feelings towards the war and what is going on around the world, but everyone refuses to look at the facts of what is really going on over there.

Therefore, I wanna talk about this myspace that was brought to my attention today. There apparently is a movement to get it taken off myspace because it has Iraqi video of several American soldiers being killed by a sniper. I admit, it's pretty disturbing (if you want the link, you can email me and I'll send it to ya). But I'm sorry ya'll, it's the First Amendment. You can't claim a right on a pick and choose basis. Either you have freedom of speech or you don't. THERE IS NO GRAY AREA!

So yeah, I guess what I really wanted to say in this journal... after all my rambling... is that, well...

I really like being a political science major... and well...

It makes me feel like I may be able to make a real difference one day.

Oh yeah! And I really want a t-shirt that says, "Be a TERRORIST, think for yourself!"
